Vegetables Anyone?
Recently we decided to try and start a few of the vegetables that we will be planting in the garden from seeds this year. I've grown plenty of flowers from seeds, so I figure we should be fairly safe trying the veggies...keep your fingers crossed though! Levi and I sat down last night and determined which seeds to start inside, which to start in the garden and a "rough" planting time line for everything. Based on this planting schedule George and I "started" about 65 tomato seeds this morning, with a fairly even split between the Big Boy and Roma varieties. I figure they won't all make it, but even if we lose half we will still have plenty left and if we are lucky maybe we can sell or give away the others. We also "started" about 10 eggplant seeds...according to the package we are a little behind schedule on these, but hopefully we can get a few to produce for us. We also "started" two varieties of sunflowers (Mammoth & Seasonal Beauty) yesterday...I've got to have some flowers too! With any luck the ground will not be too wet and we (Steve/PA) can finish getting the garden plot ready so we can plant the green peas (specially requested by George) real soon and the sweet corn not long behind the peas. We will be "starting" the peppers (green, red & jalapeno) inside in a few weeks and pretty much everything else (squash, zucchini, cantaloupe, watermelon & pumpkin) outside soon after the peppers...there will also be green beans, but I didn't buy any seeds for those. As you can see we are getting "geared-up" for gardening season. With any luck we will have some sprout pictures to post in a week or so. I don't know about you, but I'm getting hungry for fresh veggies already. I guess being able to do all of this gardening is just one of the many blessings of being a S.H.A.M. and I am thrilled to be able to take advantage of it and share it with the kids...next up CHICKENS!!
