B17 ~ Engine.

B17 ~ George climbing in.

B17 ~ Cockpit...my grandfather used to fly one of these, so it was really neat getting to take an up-close look at things.

B17 ~ Not sure what this area is called, but the bombs are stored on either side and the bottom has doors that open for when they are dropped.

B24 ~ George really liked the guns.

B24 ~ Where the nose gunner sat.

B24 ~ Engine.
Last Thursday the kids and I had the opportunity to check out some pretty rare WWII bomber planes that had flown in the day before...one of which was the same model (B17) that my grandfather flew. It was really neat to see these planes up close and get to walk through them...it really gives you an appreciation for how hard it must have been for the crews that flew bombing missions with them. George really liked them and was pretty upset when it was time to leave. I really wish we could have gotten back over on Friday to see/hear them when they took off. Hopefully they will be back again and he can check them out some more.
